A Few Tips for our Photographer Friend

Earlier we dressed down our photograher friend's fashion faux pas and now it is high time we dress him back up again.

It is our opinion that the celebrity style icon that closely reflects your optimal conference outfit is Justin Timberlake.

He is known for his fitted suits, slim ties, and hip accesories be they vests or hats. He's also credited with making sneakers with suits cool, again. Check out this article in Men's Health about how he discovered his own sense of style.

Copying a well dressed celebrity is a great way to find an "off the rack" style. The next step is in making it your own. When you come across a celebrity look that you love take note of what will and won't work on your body.  With a few slight alertations to the look you'll have something similar that completely works for you.

  1. I rather thought that the "Converse with a suit" look was pioneered by David Tennant's Doctor Who.

Perhaps something to mention in regard to this post is that if you're going to pick a celeb to model your wardrobe on you should pick one who shares your general body shape. Timberlake's skinny tie only works if the body is in proportion to the tie. He's a really narrow guy, and so the tie works for him. If you have man-shoulders, then you just can't pull it off.

  2. Thanks for your comment Matteson. I think you're off on the converse with suits. My husband rocked that look to a high school dance when we were teenagers in the 1990s. And, the look wasn't even new then. :)

Also, Matteson, we're not really speaking directly to the photographer but rather folks looking to emulate a similar style. Perhaps we should elaborate that point next time. Like we said though, if you like something then the next step you take should be to make it your own and make sure it fits your body type.

Every man wearing a suit needs to have it fitted to him. Now, whether you would go *as* skinny on the fit as JT is matter of both personal preference and personal proportion. There are also variations in tie width.

Hopefully these are notions that we'll be elaborating on in the near future as body type is something we hope to tackle here at So On And So Forth. As you'll notice we've only been in business for five days. Keep that constructive criticism coming though.

  3. Without me digressing into how much I can't stand canvas shoes with suits...let me just say that the choice to use Mr. Timberlake was an editorial one and given the subject of the photographer, I would argue the right one.

However, I do agree with Matteson it is helpful to look for models that have similar body types. It is something that I do but with caution. I always say that if you see something you like on someone else does not mean it will look good on you. Always try it on :)

Good stuff! Thanks for the comments everyone!

  4. Whatever one may say about canvas shoes/kicks and suit combos, I would just like to point out what I think makes the outfit combo in "The Photographer" image work.
The button-down is in an interesting, offbeat pattern, though the color combo may be on the traditional side. The hipster tie (the skinny shape and two-color thick diagonal stripes are what make this "hipster" to me) and utilitarian backpack are what help make the Converse work with the suit. This outfit would look a little "trying to hard", though, unless the suit were perfectly fitted.

  5. Oyukichan, you are right. Fit is everything!
